JANUARY 16, 2009
This meeting will feature Pat Haufschildt from Livingston’s Sewing Machine. Her family business is
79 years old and has always been family owned and operated. She has worked for the family for 30
years. The changes from the treadle
machine to a full computerized sewing machine are many. With today’s sophisticated embroidery
designs, the computer is as important as an embroidery sewing machine. Bring your questions and let’s talk computers
and sewing.
Also, as discussed
at our meeting in November, we plan to have a short Q & A session with our
panel of experts. You may submit
questions in advance on the SIG Web site, www.srnet-foxvalley.org
You may also use the form provided at the F108 sign-in
table. We all learn from this.
DECEMBER 11, 2008 By Norm Pregler
This was the SeniorNet Holiday Luncheon held at the VFW hall again this year. There were about 45 members and guests present and a wonderful meal was served by the staff. Our good Secretary, Gladys Schwandt, writes in addition, “Recognition was made to all volunteers who serve the organization in various ways, including roles as SeniorNet Coordinator, SIG leaders, Webmaster, Officers, Steering Committee, Newsletter Composition, Mailing Crew, Teaching, and assisting in numerous capacities to keep over 200 registered members informed and educated.”
There were no other SIG meetings during December; they will begin again in January. I certainly take this available space to wish everyone the very best the New Year can deliver for you.
GENEALOGY SIG By Mary Klein
We will start off the new
year by looking at criteria for evaluating genealogy Web sites. Our Web site topics for this month will be
County Court Records Online, Finding Canadian Ancestors, and a miscellaneous
list that includes marriage records from
NOVICE SIG By Jerry Sobiesczyk
For the Novice SIG, we will be starting the new year with a new name, “RESOURCE SHARING SIG”. This will give all persons interested in all aspects of computering a chance to ask a question or share knowledge. Nothing is too trivial or too complex for group discussion.
Tom Wiegand will provide a program on the Free Audio Program, “AUDACITY.” Audacity is a free, easy-to-use audio editor and recorder for Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux and other operating systems.
You can use Audacity to:
1) Record live audio, 2) Convert tapes and records into
digital recordings or CDs, 3) Edit Ogg Vorbis, MP3, WAV or AIFF sound files, 4) Cut, copy, splice
or mix sounds together, 5) Change the speed or pitch of a recording, 6) And
more.... Don’t miss this January program!!!!
MAILING CREW… DECEMBER
and FUTURE
Thanks to Arlene Clark, Donna
Dutter, Ron Haberland, Bob Jakubowski, Barb Johnson, and Dolores Spitz for
preparing the December newsletter and envelopes for mailing. With so many helping hands, they even accomplished
some other tasks for the SeniorNet office.
Perhaps you have wondered what the Mailing Crew is all about. These are volunteers who come to FVTC for a couple of hours to help SeniorNet, and usually share some friendly conversation in the process. Each month, they receive an e-mail notice about the exact day and time, which is always early in the month. If they are available, they respond by e-mail. If they aren’t available, no response is necessary. No one helps every month. A few help several months each year. Some help once or twice. The Mailing Crew could use more volunteers. No computer experience required! Would you help SeniorNet? To volunteer, or for more information, contact Judy Williams at seniornet@fvtc.edu
MEET THE MEMBER By Norm Pregler
From time to time, when space is available in this letter, we try to introduce or give information on a local member. Tom Wiegand is our SIG Vice President, recently elected. In trying to gain enough information about him to make a proper introduction, so far after three interviews, I have his name, rank and serial number! From a brief employment write-up he did present to me, he does qualify as one of our experts and I couldn’t begin to tell you his tremendous background as I don’t understand a word of it! His computer back ground would rip your socks off.
From our own SeniorNet SIG Web site, we know
that Tom was on contract to Kimberly-Clark as an S/400 system administrator
from 3/97 to 8/01 and at Tenneco Automotive from 8/95 to 3/97. He did software
installation and upgrades at various companies in northeast Wisconsin from 9/94
to 8/95.
He was on contract to IBM from 3/93 to 9/94
providing level 2 support services for the AS/400 PC Support and Client Access
products. From 7/91 to 3/93 he provided consulting services in Minnesota,
Wisconsin, Illinois and Kansas.
Tom was team leader for local area networking
of desk top computers, mid-range systems, main-frame systems, and non-IBM
products in the IBM Rochester programming laboratory from July 1987 to April
1991.
Earlier assignments at IBM Rochester include
manager of communication test environment, coordinator of competitive
communication product analysis, and team leader in IBM System/38 communication
test.
Before joining IBM in 1979, Tom held
positions of computer programming manager, data center Manager, system
programmer, application programmer, and data processing technician.
Take a look above at the Resource Sharing (Novice) SIG write-up by Jerry, and you’ll get an idea. I can only say, introduce yourself to Tom and ask questions.
